rattles, medicine bags & more

Painting on rawhide and leather began for me in my mid-60s. I enjoy it deeply, though I am not, nor have I ever been, a hunter. There is a kinship felt when working with animal hides and bone. As I paint cow skulls, rawhide drums, and other natural surfaces, I feel a deepening connection to — and respect for — our Creator and all living things. Rawhide has become my preferred canvas for acrylic art, and it offers me something beyond pure expression. It is a way to bless the beasts, to honor them and give them a second life through art.

Most of these pieces have been on display at Tortilla Flat, many have sold. I add new art work & artifacts about 4x year at both Tortilla Flat and Casa de Baca Gallery.
